EVERSLEIGH & WALLACE VALE DROUGHTMASTERS

Although Eversleigh Droughtmasters is a relatively "young" stud, the Underwood Family's involvement in the commercial beef cattle industry, and specifically breeding Droughtmasters, spans more than 4 decades.

Formed in 2004, Eversleigh Droughtmasters (Stud #1101) was originally based at "Eversleigh" in western Qld, 100km south of Hughenden. The majority of the stud's foundation females were sourced from our 1800 head commercial breeder herd along with 13 registered females purchased through the sale ring.

In 2009 we doubled our stud profile after buying the complete Wallace Vale stud and commercial herds, as well as the Foundation stud's prefix and brand. This purchase enabled us to introduce completely new bloodlines to the two studs within our own operation. To this day, both studs are still run separately.

The ongoing drought forced our hand to drastically reduce our numbers, so "Pine Hills" north of Wallumbilla in SW Qld was purchased in June 2014 to enable us to keep a number of core breeders. At the end of 2015, as a result of the sale of our 2 western properties, we moved to "Pine Hills" permanently.

While most of our bulls are sold in the paddock, a select number from the two studs are presented annually at the Roma Droughtmaster Bull Sale in October. Replacement females are generally sold privately. However, this year, for the first time ever, we are presenting two young registered females at the Droughtmaster National Female Sale in Gympie on Saturday 9 March. We have come full circle, as this is the same sale and venue where we purchased our original stud females 15 years ago. When he first started out in the beef cattle industry, the late Wally King gave Roger some advice which he still follows to this day ... "A bull's got to look like a bull, and a cow has got to look like a cow."

Roger & Jenny Underwood (pictured here at a recent Rome Sale where two cows donated by Roger & Jenny raised $12,000.00 for the NW Qld flood relief efforts) can be contacted on 0488 417 385 (Roger) and 0428 417 120 (Jenny). Eversleigh Droughtmasters can be followed on Facebook here. Further information and a full background on the two studs and commercial operation is available on Eversleigh's website here.
